the whispertown 2000 09/19/09

Last September, my wife and I decided to take a vacation to the UK and spend a few days in London. A week or two before leaving we plotted out our days to make sure we could do all of the traditional touristy things - Big Ben, Eye of London, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Windsor Palace, etc.

Being a music fan, I also pulled up Pollstar to see if there were any good bands playing, and lo and behold I saw that one of my favorite indie acts, The Whispertown 2000, were playing at the London Luminaire. So we did all of the traditional touristy things AND went to see Whispertown bring their own jaunty flavor of Los Angeles alt-country tunes to the good people of London. And it rocked.

Check out a few of the choice tracks below and enjoy!

whispertown 2000 03/19/09

Fantastic. Exhausting. Day.

Our first day of SXSW 2009 is over - and it was (as expected) fantastic.

Managed to catch Whispertown 2000 and some of Wildbirds & Peacedrums at the End of the Road Festival showcase, saw Hockey, Other Lives, Great Northern, Annuals and some of Zee Avi at the Filter Magazine showcase at Cedar Street and wrapped up the day shows with Cotton Jones at Twangfest. Good times.

Hockey probably took the prize for most rocking showcase (and we didn't even know who they were before we showed up at the showcase!) but definitely the best moment of our day was getting an exclusive recording of the Whispertown gang performing a stripped down version of "Time Will Welcome Anything" on the street at the corner of 3rd and Lavaca.

Lead singer Morgan Nagler sat on a bench, played an unplugged electic guitar and sang while Vanessa, Tod and Casey sang back up and banged out rhythms. It was an amazing performance and reminded me that there's nothing quite like Austin and SXSW. Pedesterians, bicycles and city buses rushing by while a band closes their eyes and plays their heart out on the sidewalk.

Enjoy!

whispertown2000 06/10/04

So here I am. Like I never left ;)

Wow - I didnt realize its been over two months. Kind of weird.

So I took a break. Life is pretty damn good. I want to share again. Sweeet!

OKAY. Whispertown2000 has come up with a pretty cool concept. Rather then book a "formal" tour - they put up a post on their MySpace asking people to find them homes/clubs/trailer parks at which they could play. No money needed, just a place to sleep and enough in donations/merch sales to get to the next town. How supersexy is that? Hell they can't even be positive they are going to make it to the next town. That takes some serious courage.

I'm sure this has been done before, but I've never run across it - so I wanted to let all the kids out in Lullabye's Blog Land know. GO SEE THEM! Oh, and they're playing with a guy named Runion who also sings beautiful songs. Check him out here.

Side note - just found their obligatory fan site - lots of fans going nuts over hosting Whispertown shows. How cute ;)

Oh and since this is a Live Music blog - here is their gig from the Echo in Los Angeles in June 2004. They opened for Jenny Lewis/Elected and put on a pretty kick ass show. I think this was one of their first public appearances - I was pretty damn impressed.
