northern state 11/09/07
We've come back to an extremely cold Texas, though it seems fitting. Lullabyes moved from Houston to Dallas, one year ago TODAY, and a cold front had come through on that day as well. In honor of the cold weather we bring you a "keep warm!" picture from the ladies of Northern State.
Had a chance to check out Northern State a couple of weeks ago who were touring in support of their most recent record, 'Can I Keep This Pen' which came out on Mike Patton's record label, Ipecac, in August. If you've never heard of Northern State, they're a trio of female rappers from NYC (Long Island). If you want a quick comparison, I'd say that they combine the best of old-school Beastie Boys coupled with Luscious Jackson.
They were in Dallas opening for Tegan & Sara at the House of Blues (which is becoming one of my favorite local venues). All I can say is that that the girls ROCKED and owned the crowd with their free-styling rhymes, fuzzy distorted guitars and banging beats that evoked the afore-mentioned License to Ill era of Beastie Boys.
I highly recommend checking out the new record - listen to studio tracks at their MySpace, and you can buy the record here. The record features some seriously smooth production - great for any party. The live show was more raw - not a lot of vocal effects, and less instrumentation - but completely rocking. I'm already looking forward to their next show in Dallas.
Enjoy!

Thanks for these! I really dug Northern States set that night too.
I can't say I share your taste for the House of Blues, though :)
Just so you know, the "Mother May I" track is incomplete :)
hey dude - it looks like its all there, i just checked the size against the one on my hd and listened to the link i've posted. I think your d/l may not have completed.
let me know if you are still having problems.
on HOB - I tell you, im a fan of any venue with good ventilation. I hate coming out smelling like cigarettes, plus you cant beat the acoustics in there.
peace!
