g love + sauce 04/12/04

G Love - the Lovemeister.

Slow grooves and hip hop blues. Over the last decade G Love has evolved from a Philadephia local boy, to the catalyst for the folky surf sound groove now storming a radio near you.

A Star in his own right, G Love also released Jack Johnson's Rodeo Clowns in 98 - the two having met after Jack used some of G Love's music in one of his surf films.

Heres a brief bio from VH1
G. Love & Special Sauce are a trio from Philadelphia, PA. Their laid-back, sloppy blues sound is quite unique, as it encompasses the sound/production of classic R&B and recent rap artists (the Beastie Boys, in particular). The group -- G. Love (born Garrett Dutton) on guitar/vocals/harmonica, Jeff Clemens on drums, and Jim Prescott on upright bass -- released their self-titled debut in 1994 on Okeh/Epic.

I've had the pleasure of seeing of seeing G Love several times over the years - and have always appreciated their open taping policy - soundboard feeds at nearly every show!

This is my favorite G Love show - and is where he and Tristan Prettyman debuted "Beautiful Beautiful". Unfortunately, due to the way Tristan was mic'd you can barely hear her parts. If anyone has a Soundboard copy of this song where you can hear her, please send me an email!

the eames era

I discovered this band last fall - someone had posted about them on a forum I frequent, and I decided to check out their tunes.

I never expect to love bands I randomly check out on the Net, but this time I was pleasantly suprised. Ashlin Phillip's vocals subtly remind me of That Dog - the vocal stylings performing the gentle swoops that Anna Waronker perfected on That Dog's Retreat From the Sun record.

My elation over finding a new band quickly gave way to chagrin when I found out that their upcoming tour had been cancelled when their tour bus had been in an accident with an army truck!

Good news is that its 3 months later, the band has healed, and the tour is back on! They will be in Texas in early February and you can bet that I will be there.

On a somewhat amazing side note - I was listening to their MySpace mp3s yesterday and wishing they were coming to town sooner, so I could buy their records. Later, I went over to Half Price Books to find a copy of Contact, by Carl Sagan, for my girl and found a copy of the Eames Era 2nd EP for $3 in the Bargain Bin!!

Here's my favorite track - buy it here
